In an independently conducted organizational sensing survey of the ten R&D departments in Global Beauty Care, the antiperspirant/deodorant department ranked a close second to the top, overall. People gave extremely high ratings to the topics of clear expectations, positive feedback and recognition, good relationships with their managers, and the opportunity to do what they do best.
Contrary to common belief, innovation comes from the gut and the soul, rather than from top-down directives. For scientists and researchers, innovation is at the center of the vocation they've chosen and more importantly, what they instinctively love to do.
As it turned out, everyone in the organization shared this passion. So, we debunked the collective myth that innovation was only done by the scientists in the labs (as evidenced by the patents or "wood on their walls.") ÊAnd we set up the conditions to allow innovation to happen naturally, instead of demanding it. This ended up creating a common bond throughout the organization. Now, everyone innovates. Everywhere. All the time.
Top level scientists are leaving their doors open now. They understand that their responsibilities extend beyond creating technical breakthroughs to teaching and growing the organization.
Three types of learning are fostered now: personal, organizational, and technical. Monthly department meetings include rotating project team presentations to encourage cross-fertilization. Annual technology reviews by senior management are open to the entire department, so that everyone can participate and profit from the feedback. Project success criteria now includes adherence to and promotion of the organization's new vision and value system.
Any organization's success is dependent on multi-dimensional alignment, within and between individuals, and between the organization, the Company, consumers, and society. We began with individual self-awareness, encouraging people to become congruent within themselves physically, cognitively, emotionally, and spiritually. People now relate in more meaningful ways to each other, to their work, and by extension, to the impact their work has in the world. As a result, productivity, accountability, and vitality have increased remarkably.
It's hard to find a seat in the cafeteria at lunchtime. People are sending each other thank you notes, acknowledging accomplishments, and celebrating key personal and professional milestones. They are creating an inclusive community that provides a place of belonging for everyone.
