Looking back, the work that we did for Apple was a precursor to the era of personalized computing. Apple asked AlbenFaris* to envision how the tried and true "look and feel" of the Macintosh might evolve. We met this intriguing challenge using many of the design techniques and tools that are now incorporated in the Sea Change Design Process. We set out to realize these intentions:
- Develop a design strategy for the next generation of the Macintosh user experience that reflects Apple and Macintosh values; and uniquely positions Apple in a marketplace of look-alike competitors.
- Design customizable appearances that push the boundaries of the Mac OS, allowing users to personalize their computers to suit their own aesthetics, moods, tasks, and environments.
Themes were later reborn on the web as a new movement called "skins." Today, the computing industry continues to respond to the demand for more humane technology. The ripple effect we intended has yet to be fully realized: computing environments that allow people to choose what works best for them, instead of having to conform to the confines of the computer.
